I have taken to calling this room The Cabin, due of course to it’s nautical décor, but also the cozy feeling it has when you are in it. D’s room in our previous home was nautical too (with much of the accessories and furniture reused here), but I wanted to make this room more grown up. A room that would take him into and through his teen years.
BEFORE: The room felt very dark, small, and dated. The lace valance and the wall color were not doing it any favors either. The kids had already picked out their rooms, while we were viewing the house, so I was thinking of ideas for the space before we actually owned it (am I the only one that does this with homes they like?). I am not great at remembering to take before photos, my apologies for the terrible photo…will try to be better at this.
AFTER: What a difference paint can make!
I found this ceiling light at Home Depot. The style matched the lamp that we already owned perfectly, but it came in a rusty brown finish that I wasn’t fond of. I LOVE spray paint…paint of any kind really, but am especially fond of spray paint. I can see an item I like, but not the color, and think, “Yeah, I can make that work.” I took the light apart, spray painted it in a flat black finish, put it back together, and put it up. Thanks to my husband for teaching me how to install light fixtures too, it is really easy to do! Now I don’t have to wait for him to get to it on the “honey do” list…maybe that was his plan all along.
The rug worked as a perfect template for the gallery wall. I measured it, then added a couple inches to allow more space between items.
I then measured it out on the wall, taping off the area, attaching each item with screws and wall plugs (when necessary for the heavier items).
Gallery wall complete.
The Finished Product!
D’s bed fit perfectly in the dormer window.
Call it what you will…neat freak, OCD, Type A…I have come to terms with it and will answer to all;)
Still need to put labels on all the bins, but at least everything is unpacked and organized.
The natural light in this house is one of my favorite things about it.
It’s safe to say that D and I are both loving his new room. Only around 15 more rooms to go….ahhhh!!!
